Antica Friggitoria, for freshly-made doughnuts in Livorno, Italy

The Antica Friggitoria, locally known as Il Frataio (the doughnut maker), produces the freshest and most delicious doughnuts in town! From the traditional type with the hole in the middle, to doughnuts generously filled with custard and chocolate cream, this is the place to stop for an energy-giving snack while you explore Livorno's market area.

Brothers Davide and Luigi Rainone took over the family business in the 90s. It has been in the family since 1947 when their grandfather Luigi was in charge.

The tradition of freshly-made produce has been handed down over the years. The first batch of doughnuts is made at 6am, and although they have a machine to roll the dough out, they still cut the round shapes by hand!

The Antica Friggitoria makes traditional doughnuts - with a hole in the middle - known as frati in Italian, filled doughnuts (or bomboloni), fried polenta scagliozzi, as well as the carnival favourites, cenci at carnival time, and rice fritters, or frittelle di riso, for Father's Day on 19th March.
