Cantina Senese
A beautiful antique marble counter, a host of Tuscan wines, local artists’ paintings, straw-seated chairs and paper tablecloths bearing the restaurant logo: this is the decor that greets you at the Cantina Senese, the well-established wine-seller and Osteria in the heart of one of Livorno’s oldest and most authentic districts, Il Borgo.
Run by the combined talents of Nadia in charge of the cooking, her two sons Fabio and Paolo in the restaurant, and Fabio’s wife Chiara a knowledgeable (and English-speaking) wine expert, the Cantina Senese is an informal and friendly restaurant with an authentic atmosphere. It offers a variety of Italian dishes with special emphasis on Livornese fish specialities.
The Cantina Senese menu is supplemented by daily special dishes, including the rich Livornese fish stew, Cacciucco, on Fridays, and Spaghetti with anchovies on Thursdays. And there is plenty of choice for those who prefer meat to fish as well.
Cantina Senese is open every day exept Sundays. Lunch is served from 12pm onwards and dinner from 7pm. It is also open during the mornings for coffees, drinks and Tuscan snacks. The restaurant is air-conditioned. Closed in the month of August.
How to get there: ON FOOT: from the Quattro Mori, follow the road south along the port, turn left across Piazza Mazzini and up Via delle Navi, and then right into Borgo dei Cappuccini.
