Clean Up the World
Time to roll up our sleeves and take part in Livorno's effort to Clean Up the World an international campaign which began in Australia in 1990.
There are two meeting places in Livorno on Saturday, both at 9.30: one at the Spiaggetta dell'Accademia, the small area of beach next to the Naval Academy: as well as clearing up rubbish from the beach, there will also be a general survey of the amount of cigarette stubs discarded in the area following the distribution of portable ashtrays to bathers during the summer. A cigarette stub takes from 1 to 5 years to break down.
The second meeting place is at the Isola Ecologica Aamps in Viale del Tirreno, near Ciano monument. From here the group will follow a route over which all possible rubbish will be cleared. Last year more than 1000 kg of rubbish was collected, including bottles, mattresses and abandoned toilets.
Also on Saturday 27th, the detainees of Gorgona prison will be cleaning up the Island of Gorgona.
On Thursday 25th and Friday 26th September several classes from local schools will be involved in taking a census of urban decay around their schools (see article.)
The results of this census will be reported on October 6th, on the occasion of D Day, Scartiamo La Città.
