The Central Market itself (the huge building that dominates the canal between Piazza Cavour and Piazza della Repubblica) deals almost entirely in food, with a separate section for fresh fish, and another for fruit and veg. The main food hall is a myriad of stalls (180 in total) selling fresh meat, hams and cheese, bread and bakery products, fresh pasta, freshly ground coffee, as well as a few non-food shops on the outer edges of the market. It's a great place to buy picnic food, or a hunk of Parmesan to take back home, or even a week's groceries if you are self-catering in the area (open mornings only, Mon-Sat).

Outside the main Livorno food market there are two more open-air market areas open from Monday to Saturday. Right next door is an array of stalls selling clothes, shoes, tablecloths, costume jewellery and various other goods at reasonable prices, while just beyond this is Livorno's lively and very colourful outdoor fruit and veg market in Piazza Cavallotti (mornings only).

All the shops in the streets adjacent to the market area of Livorno and on the other side of the Fosso Reale (the main canal) on the Scali Olandesi sell a variety of affordable and bargain goods including clothes, shoes, and household items. It's a good place for general browsing and bargain hunting.

Via Grande

Most of the stores on Livorno's Via Grande are well-known chain stores selling good quality clothes and shoes. There are also a number of perfumeries, a couple of book shops, one of Livorno's biggest music shops, and some local jewellers, as well as plenty of cafés for mid-shopping coffee breaks.

Here there is a row of banks and the main post office, as well as a children's boutique, an unusual jewellery shop and a store selling sweets, chocolate and coffee. The market area is on the left. Piazza Cavour is a good place for a coffee break, and then Via Ricasoli offers up to the minute quality fashions from chain stores and local boutiques. Via Magenta is a pleasant shopping street offering a variety of different stores, and in the far corner of Piazza Attias is Livorno's best department store, Coin, and a variety of other shops lining the square. Continuing south, Via Marradi has more exclusive boutiques, jewellery shops and others selling tableware, accessories and gifts for the home, and the pedestrianised side of Via Cambini has a variety of interesting little shops and a popular wine bar.

Via Borra

Right in the heart of the Venezia districtVia Borra well-known for its antique shops which offer a wide range of furniture and curiosities from different eras of the past.

Piazza XX Settembre

The whole square is taken up by Livorno's Mercatino Americano which was established after WWII coinciding with the US army base Camp Darby. It is well-known all over Italy but its glory days have long since passed and many stall holders have packed up and left. Those that remain sell army surplus and camping gear and affordable fashions, as well as copies of Italian football shirts including those of Livorno Football Club. The shops around the outside of the square are mainly stocked with young fashions and more army surplus. The market is due to be moved to the port area in the near future.
