Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande, LivornoPiazza Grande, LivornoPiazza Grande was once one of Europe’s largest and most impressive city squares, stretching from the town hall (‘comune’) to the cathedral (‘duomo’). Sadly, it was divided into two when the huge white modern building was erected in the middle.

The piazza is one of Livorno’s busiest, with most of the city’s bus routes passing through here. The duomo – a post-war reconstruction -  dominates the square on the south side, while the only portico to survive the war, dating from the 17th century and designed by Alessandro Pieroni, stands in the north-east corner.

The Cathedral of Livorno

The Cathedral, or Duomo of Livorno: in Piazza Grande, LivornoThe Cathedral, or Duomo of Livorno: in Piazza Grande, LivornoLivorno’s original cathedral (or Duomo), in Piazza Grande, was designed by Alessandro Pieroni and built by Cantagallina. It was completed in 1606, dedicated to St Francis of Assisi. Sadly, the original building was completely destroyed by bombings in 1943. The modern-day reconstruction was completed in 1952 and is a reproduction of the original. The interior contains some interesting early 17th-century paintings by a number of well-known Tuscan artists: the Triumph of Saint Giulia by Jacopo Ligozzi; the Assumption of the Virgin by Domenico Cresti da Passignano, and Saint Francis of Assisi by Jacopo Chimenti da Empoli.
