The Region of TuscanyLivorno belongs to the region of Tuscany, one of Italy’s twenty different regions. Tuscany itself is subdivided into ten provinces, each of which is governed by its own provincial town, and Livorno is one of these.

The city of Livorno lies on the west coast of Tuscany on the extreme south of the Arno River delta. Its province stretches to the south, a long narrow strip of land widening in the south, containing a surprising variety of scenery. The province of Livorno borders on Pisa province to the north and east, and on Grosseto province to the south, while to the west it faces the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas. It has a total population of 330,000 inhabitants and covers an area of  1,211 sqkm (727sq miles).

Although mostly low-lying, there is some higher ground in the areas immediately to the south of Livorno and on the Piombino promontory. There are a number of small towns and villages throughout the area, each one with its own special character and history. The coastline, known as the Costa degli Etruschi, begins as a series of rocky inlets, gradually giving way to long stretches of sandy beach along which there are a number of small seaside towns and resorts, as well as a small spa centre at Venturina.

Going inland, the province boasts areas of national park with some excellent walking and horseriding opportunities. There are many medieval villages steeped in history, and there is the wine route, leading you through the area’s most prestigious vineyards. Also belonging to the province of Livorno is the island of Elba and a further four smaller islands which are part of a group of eight islands collectively known as the Tuscan Archipelago.
