See Livorno by Local Bus!
The Cheapest way to get around LivornoLocal Livorno bus in Piazza GrandeThere is no easier or cheaper way to explore Livorno than by using the local ATL bus service. There are 15 different bus routes covering the whole of the city and the surrounding districts, and for just €3 (the cost of a one-day Livorno Card) you can get unlimited local bus travel for a whole day, hopping on and off any bus whenever and wherever you please. Alternatively, just buy a €1 single ticket per journey (valid for 70 minutes from when you stamp it on the bus) if you are only going to take one or two buses.
Nearly all Livorno’s orange ATL buses go through the central Piazza Grande, one of the city’s main squares (just 100m from the cruise ship shuttle bus stop).
The Number 1 and the Number 2 services are particularly useful since they cover some of Livorno’s most interesting and noteworthy areas. Here’s a brief description of the two routes:
BUS NUMBER 1
Starting from Livorno Railway Station, the Number One takes a straight route along Viale Carducci right down to Piazza della Repubblica, then down Via Grande, through Piazza Grande, to the old Mediceo Port (past the Quattro Mori statue) at the far end of Via Grande. Here it turns left and follows the coast road south, past the Terrazza Mascagni, the Church of San Jacopo and the Naval Academy, through Ardenza Mare and on to Antignano where it turns round at the stop called Miramare (the name of a restaurant there) to come back along the exact same route.
The No.1 bus runs every 15 minutes from the station, with additional buses in between these which only run as far as Ardenza Mare. The journey from the station to Antignano takes just over half an hour. From Piazza Grande it takes about 25 minutes.
BUS NUMBER 2
This route also starts at Livorno Railway Station, but takes a longer route to get to Piazza della Repubblica. Instead of heading straight down Viale Carducci, it turns right down Via Lunardi through the district of Sorgenti and then into Via Garibaldi and the Fiorentina district, past Piazza Garibaldi and the Scali delle Cantine (opposite the Fortezza Nuova) and into Piazza della Repubblica. It then heads down Via Grande into Piazza Grande, turning left alongside the Duomo and up Via Cairoli, continuing along this central thoroughfare through Piazza Cavour, Via Ricasoli, Piazza Attias, Via Marradi, past Villa Fabbricotti and out of town towards Ardenza Terra.
Here the route divides: the number 2R goes on to Antignano taking the inland road through the old village of Antignano and ending its route at the same place as the Number One.
The regular number 2 (with Montenero written on the front) instead heads up to the hillside village of Montenero, its final stop in Piazza delle Carrozze. From here you can get the funicular railway up to the top of the hill for fantastic views over Livorno and along the coast.
The No.2 bus for Montenero runs four times an hour and takes 40 minutes to cover the whole journey from the station to Piazza delle Carrozze. From Piazza Grande it takes just 25 minutes. The Funicular railway journey takes just a few minutes and the service runs to connect with bus arrivals throughout the day.
You can get a Livorno Card from the Information Kiosk opposite the town hall, near the cruise shuttle bus stop.
