A Beautiful Weekend in Livorno
My friend and I spent a smashing weekend in Livorno recently. Thanks to the Livorno Now website my friend and I were able to see much more of Livorno and appreciate it. The weather was great, bright and sunny and perfect for strolling along the canal in the "little Venice" district. This led to the seafront and a few drinks in Bar Terzi (Piazza Mazzini). We purchased tickets for the following days game between AS Livorno and AC Milan(only 11 euros each) and after window shopping on the Via Grande we finished our day in the very friendly and welcoming Bar Civili drinking the famous Ponce(coffee, rum, lemon).
Car Rental Experience
Just returned from our med cruise/trip. I rented a car from SalaCar as you had recommended. The experience was great---The car was waiting for us as we got off the gangway at the dock in Livorno. The fee was 70 Euros which included the dock pickup/drop-off, unlimited mileage, vat, cdw etc. This was less expensive than the other car agencies & provided great service. We toured the Tuscan countryside with visits to San Gimignano, Pisa etc.
Cruise to Livorno
Dear Sarah,
Just thought I would let you know how much we enjoyed our visit to your part of the world. We decided to take a 4 hour excursion which went first to Puccini's house followed by a sail on Lago Massaciuccoli-then an hour or so in Pisa. Not long, but we managed to see the Baptistry and the Cathedral, as well as a cappuccino! It was a beautiful day, and we enjoyed everything. The house was fascinating and the lake was really peaceful- I now have some nice material for a bit of painting. The whole holiday was just right. We did our own exploring in Rome, having been given maps and advice over transport, and I definitely want to go back again for 2-3 days. Someone in Rome will have found my purse which I must have dropped on leaving a taxi, but despite containing my business card for our holiday cottage, no-one has contacted me to return the money or book a holiday! Can really recommend Thomson Celebration as a cruise ship. There was a lovely mix of generations onboard, with lots of folk who had had multiple holidays on that ship.Thankyou again for your help. Best wishes
Margaret
Our Day in Livorno
It went well. The weather was beautiful! There were buses at the dock and hordes of people using public transportation. I know a lot of the crew went into town as well. The fee on the bus was a real bargain. I had passed out some info that you sent me for folks not going on tours. (Pisa and Florence. We did that after the crossing but not all people were staying. We did it on our own.) I am convinced people are like cows, they are willing to pack into those buses, afraid of adventure! We went into town, had coffee and talked to a girl working for the city regarding the Mercato Centrale. She was very helpful and spoke English. We decided to roam the local town market instead. We walked down to the old port which was lovely. Then we did the hop on hop off bus to get a better perspective of the city. This was a good idea and the tour guide was fairly helpful. We stopped at station 7, (I
Rememberance in Livorno
In April 2008 my sisters and I took our mother back to the honeymoon home of our parents 23 Fiume. It was bitter sweet having lost our dad in 2006, but we loved every minute of it. Everything was as mom remembered it, from the laundry across the street, to the cafe on the corner. This was my first trip to Livorno, Italy and I enjoyed every moment, the food, the scenic ride into Pisa, the train to Florence the shopping, it was wonderful! Two days were not enough! I can not wait until I return.
The Gower Family
I have been contacted by a lady in England who is researching the Gower family. They lived in Livorno in the 19th century, possibly in what is now Via dei Gower (Quercianella/Chioma?). Anyone who has any knowledge of the family or their descendents, please get in touch.
Trying to find a Restaurant
About 10 years ago an Italian friend took me to Livorno all the way from Florence just to have what she considered the best seafood in Tuscany. I liked it very much. I don't know what the restaurant was called but I am going to be in the area in a couple months and would like to visit it again. It had a proprietor that was very gregarious and visited the tables and made jokes with all the patrons (in Italian of course) which I could barely understand. The portions were massive, and for dessert we had lemon sorbetto with some Limoncello to pour into it if we liked. I am assuming it was a well known place since we drove there from Firenze. If anyone knows of this place please let me know. Thanks.
