The Fattori Art Gallery, the Church of San Jacopo, and a Stroll along the Seafront

The Church of San Jacopo, Livorno: one of Livorno's most interesting churchesThe Church of San Jacopo, Livorno: one of Livorno's most interesting churchesA relaxing but rewarding way to spend a day in Livorno is to pay a visit to the city’s public art gallery, officially called the Museo Civico G. Fattori after Giovanni Fattori, the Livornese artist born in 1825, many of whose works are on display here. The gallery is situated in a lovely park , Villa Mimbelli.

Having looked round the gallery, walk down to the seafront along Via San Jacopo and visit the Church of San Jacopo, one of Livorno’s oldest and most interesting churches. Afterwards you could have lunch in one of the nearby restaurants (see below), or you could have a quick sandwich at one of the seafront cafés and then stroll along the seafront back towards town, taking in the elegant Terrazza Mascagni on the way. After a long restaurant lunch, if you still have time and are not too sleepy (!) you could walk off the food in the same way, or catch a bus back into town.
The Museo Civico G. Fattori is open from Tuesday to Sunday 10am-1pm and 4-7pm in the winter. The afternoon opening time is sometimes extended to 11pm in the summer. The gallery is situated in Via San Jacopo in Acquaviva 65. Entrance fee €4, €2.50 for groups and school parties of minimum 15 persons. Free for children under 6 and for the disabled.

How to get to the Museo Fattori: Bus no. 8 from Piazza Grande to Via Montebello. Otherwise, catch bus no. 1 from the station or Piazza Grande to the Church of S. Jacopo and then walk up Via San Jacopo from the sea end. By car, follow local signs to the museum (which is near the Naval Academy and San Jacopo district).
How to get back into town from the Church of S. Jacopo: Bus no. 1 runs along the seafront, turning into Via Grande at the port and then proceeding to the railway station.

Hire a Chauffeur: If you think using local transport might be too complicated or tiring, you could opt for a chauffeur driven car or van and be driven around the area at your own pace and to your own requirements.

Where to have lunch: restaurants: Vizi e Virtù (open for lunch at weekends, closed on Wednesdays), Da Tambe (closed on Mondays)
Where to have a sandwich or a coffee: Baracchina Bianca,(closed on Tuesdays), Il Prosciuttaio (open daily from 11am to 11pm), Fashion Caffé (closed on Mondays)
