Getting to Livorno
Coming by car: There are good motorway links into Livorno from the north, the A15 (A stands for Autostrada) from Parma to La Spezia, and the A12 linking Genoa - Livorno - Florence. From the south you can either take the A1 motorway from Rome to Florence and then head west, or you can travel up the coast on a slower but more direct route following the Aurelia, the old Roman road (which is dual carriageway for much of the way). Livorno is also linked to Florence and Pisa by what is known as the FI-PI-LI superstrada, a busy dual carriageway which offers a more direct route, and a cheaper one too - don't forget that you have to pay to use the motorways (i.e. the A roads) in Italy.
Livorno railway stationComing by train: Livorno's main railway station is at the end of Viale Carducci, about 1.5 kilometres from the city centre. There are regular direct trains to and from Florence and Pisa (Florence approx 1hour 20 minutes, Pisa 15 minutes), and (less frequently) to Rome, Genoa and Turin.
Coming by air: Most international flights into Italy come into either Rome or Milan, but the nearest airport to Livorno is Pisa, about 15km away. Pisa is the busiest airport in Tuscany (named after Galileo Galilei) and apart from flights from most of the European capitals and many other European cities, there is now also a direct flight to New York operated by Delta Airlines. There is a small station at Pisa Airport from where trains run into Pisa Centrale (as well as direct to Florence). For Livorno, change in Pisa. There is also a bus service linking the airport with Livorno railway station. Of course, car hire is available at the airport too.
The Ferry Terminal building in the Port of LivornoComing by ferry: There are ferries operating from the Port of Livorno to the Italian islands of Sardinia, Capraia and Gorgona and to the French island of Corsica. I suppose that you are more likely to be leaving Livorno to get to one of these popular holiday destinations than trying to get to Livorno by this means of transport, but you never know! And even if you are just passing through, you could plan to spend a day or two in Livorno at the beginning or end of your holiday.
