Where to Learn an Instrument in Livorno

The long tradition of music in Livorno is seen and felt in many ways in the city, not least of which in the number of music schools offering courses in music and musical instruments of all kinds. This article aims to briefly describe the various music schools in Livorno and what each one offers. Established in 1998, this school offers courses in violin, piano, keyboards, flute, guitar and singing for students of all ages. Introductory classes in music are held for children from as young as 4 to 6 years of age, while there are group music classes which prepare young children for the study of a particular instrument, such as violin, piano, flute and guitar. At a later stage, instruments are taught on a one-to-one basis. The school accepts new students at any time of the year. The school also provides students with an instrument. Students' concerts are organised twice a year, at Christmas and in June.

The Mascagni School housed in the 19th-century Gherardesca BuildingThe Mascagni School housed in the 19th-century Gherardesca BuildingIstituto Superiore di Studi Musicali Pietro Mascagni.  Named after Livorno’s famous composer, the Mascagni music school was founded in 1953, and is financed by the Province and the Comune of Livorno.  Currently awaiting government changes in music teaching, the school still offers  traditional courses in  singing, composition, guitar, clarinet, double bass, french horn, bassoon, flute, jazz, oboe, piano, saxophone, percussion instruments, trumpet, trombone, viola, violin and cello.
Courses in musical instruments are accompanied by theory of music lessons, and children who enrol at the school are expected to attend several times a week and take state music exams. The school is now situated in the Complesso Gherardesca which was built in the mid-19th century by Tuscan architect Alessandro Gherardesca.

The school’s approach to music means that individual lessons are combined with group sessions during which students get a unique opportunity to feel what it’s like to play in a band, as well as the valuable experience of playing with other musicians. There is a stage too, which adds reality to the experience. Percorsi Musicali also have a number of high quality sound-proofed rooms enabling various music lessons or recording sessions to go on at the same time. They have their own guitar repair man, and they offer professional recording facilities.

Pianos Galore at the Menicagli SchoolPianos Galore at the Menicagli SchoolCentro Pianoforte Menicagli – The Menicagli school has a twofold role, one as specialist in piano sales and hire, and the other as music school, giving lessons in piano and guitar. The school is the only one in Livorno to offer the Yamaha teaching method which concentrates first on listening to, memorizing and reproducing pieces of music , teaching students how to read music only when they can already play.
The Menicagli school also holds courses in singing for children led by Cristiano Grasso ,who also teaches piano at the school.  Cristiano is also well-known for his Springtime choir, which is also based at the Menicagli school.
