Eight Athletes from Livorno at the London 2012 Olympics

Gabriele Detti, young Livornese swimmerGabriele Detti, young Livornese swimmer The London 2012 Olympics open today, 27th July 2012, and Livorno will be well represented among the Italian team with no fewer than eight athletes competing in the games. Here is a very brief summary of the Amaranta team:

Luca Agamennoni, rower, already the winner of a silver medal in China four years ago. Considering Livorno's rowing traditions, we just have to have a rower at the Olympics! Once told by a prominent figure on the city's rowing scene that he should give up rowing, Luca is about to take part in his second Olympic games! Competing in the "Men's Four" event. (Heats, Monday 30th July at 10.40am, London time).

Andrea Baldini, foil fencer, gold medal winner at the 2006 world fencing championships. He missed the 2008 Olympics after failing a drug test, but was cleared the following year. No one is going to stop him in London! Competing in the "Men's Team Foil" (Sunday 5th August) and the "Men's Individual Foil" (Tuesday 31st July).

Gabriele Detti, swimmer, only 17 years old, the youngest of the Livornese participants. Competing in the "Men's 1500m Freestyle" event. (Heats: Friday 3rd August, 10.24am, London time) Go Gabriele!!

Federico Esposito, windsurfer, from Piombino. Federico will be competing down in Weymouth, Dorset, where all the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics are taking place. Competing on the "Men's RS-X" event (starts Tuesday 31st July, 12.00pm London time).

Aldo Montano, world champion fencer, gold medal winner in Athens eight years ago. Aldo comes from a family of world-class fencers. He famously appeared in Athens with the Livorno telephone code 0586 inked onto his hands so that spectators at home would spot him! Competing in the "Men's Team Sabre" (Quarterfinals: Friday 3rd August, 11.30am London time) and the "Men's Individual Sabre" (starts Sunday 29th July at 10.30am London time).

Giulia Quintavalle, judoka, from Cecina, gold-medal winner in the 2008 Olympics. Competing in the "Women's -57kg" event (starts Monday 31st July).

Federico Turriniswimmer. disqualified for two years in 2007 after failing a drug test, Federico has since won three national titles and a bronze medal at the European championships in Budapest. Competing in the "Men's 200m Individual Medley" (heats: Wednesday 1st August at 11.06am, London time) and the "Men's 400m Individual Medley" (heats: Saturday 28th July at 10.00am, London time).

Irene Vecchi, sabre fencer, and only 23 years old. Irene already has many sporting victories under her belt. Competing in the "Women's Individual Sabre" event (first round, Wednesday 1st August at 2.10pm - London time -, competing against Britain's Sophie Williams!).
