Visit a traditional olive press and taste some delicious olive oil!
The Frantoio Il Casone Antico olive press in Vada (in the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, just 30 km south of Livorno) is one of the last remaining places to have both modern and traditional olive presses in full working order. Customers who take their olives to be pressed into oil can choose whether to use the old mill stones powered by steam, or the stainless steel aparatus that makes up the modern pressing system.
The olive press has existed since the early 1900s and used to be part of a farm. It was taken over a few years ago by Irene Saccomani and her husband Enrico Spinelli.
But you don't have to have olives to visit the olive press! Irene and Enrico happily offer guided tours of the premises, with a detailed explanation of how olives are turned into olive oil. At the end of the tour, you can taste their extra virgin olive oil, along with a glass of local wine.
Frantoio Il Casone Antico is open for guided tours all year round, every day except Tuesdays. Opening times: 10am - 1pm and 5-8pm. Bookings also taken for groups, and tours are available in English and German.
Whether you are staying in the area on holiday, or just visiting for a day, it is possible to organise a trip to the olive press from Livorno and the surrounding area. Please contact me for more details.
Irene and Enrico have a little shop where you can buy olive oil, wine and other local produce. Their oil is also available online (see link to website below).
On Saturday evenings from 7pm Il Casone is also open for "aperitivi" of wine and locally made hams and cheeses.
