Livornese footballer Giorgio Chiellini, currently on the Italian squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, started his football career with his home team AS Livorno when he was only sixteen. He played an active part in the team's rise from Serie C1 to Serie A during his four years with the club, before moving to Fiorentina for one season, and then to Juventus in 2005 where he still plays now. He is a defender, alternating between left and centre back. He has scored a total of 29 goals during his career, including 22 for Juventus.
Born in 1984, Giorgio (who has a twin brother, Claudio, and another brother and sister) grew up in Livorno where his family still resides. He attended the Enriques high school in Livorno and in 2010 obtained a degree in Economics at the University of Turin. As a child he dreamed of becoming a basketball player and was a fan of the Lakers.
Chiellini made his first appearance for Italy against Finland in 2004, at the age of twenty, and has played for his country a total of 69 times (scoring 4 goals), including last week's match against England in this year's World Cup (14-6-14) which finished 2-1 for Italy. No doubt he will be on the team again for Italy's second World Cup match, against Costa Rica, tomorrow, Friday 20th June, at 6pm Italian time.
Once the World Cup is over, whatever the final outcome, Giorgio will be heading back to Livorno for a very important celebration of his own, as he and girlfriend Carolina Bonistalli are to be married at the Santuario di Montenero on Saturday 19th July! The reception will be held at an undisclosed location...
