Livorno and its Aquarium - a Florentine company to do the work

The Aquarium of Livorno, closed for years The Aquarium of Livorno, closed for years 3 October 2007. Perhaps we are a few steps closer to getting Livorno's aquarium back, after many years of it being closed and in a state of increasing abandon. As far as I can understand, a Florentine company called Opera Spa has been chosen by the local council to carry out the works needed to put the aquarium back in action, but we won't know until the end of November if the company's plans have been approved.
I remember taking my son to the aquarium when he was small, so that must have been about 10 years ago. Then sometime after that it was closed down and work was begun to give the building a facelift. Something went wrong (can anyone tell me what?) and the work ceased. The building has been gradually going downhill ever since, and despite all the road signs that point visitors towards 'L'Acquario', there hasn't been one for years.
These days everyone seems to head for Genoa's huge aquarium, which I suppose Livorno has never intended to compete with, but it would still be nice to see the building next to the Terrazza Mascagni be given a new lease of life.
