His most famous work is the opera, Cavalleria Rusticana which enjoyed enormous success both in Italy and abroad. Dedicated to Mascagni is the splendid seafront terrace, the Terrazza Mascagni and the Museo Mascagnano in Villa Maria (currently closed - 2012).

Livorno’s musical tradition is still deeply felt, and the Mascagni music school is responsible for teaching local youngsters the skills they need to carry on that tradition. The 18th-century Teatro Goldoni was re-opened a few years ago after lengthy restoration work. It now features a varied programme of concerts and theatrical performances.
