26-9-2013 Livorno’s tiny Nuovo Teatro delle Commedie was originally built in the mid-1800s to a design by the Pisa-born architect Alessandro Gherardesca. It is part of the Complesso Gherardesca which now houses the Istituto musicale Pietro Mascagni music school and some local government offices, in via Galilei, close to the Cisternone and the Church of Sant’Andrea.
Having been abandoned after WWII, the theatre was acquired by the municipality of Livorno in the late 1970s and used as a cultural centre. It was later fully restored, and re-opened in 2010 under the name “Teatro C” as a venue for music, art and theatrical events.
Now, in 2013, once again as the Nuovo Teatro delle Commedie, the theatre is about to open for a new season of cultural events under the direction of four no-profit associations – ARCI Livorno, Ars Nova, theatre company Pilar Ternera and the Cooperativa Marte (which runs theatre and music courses for children as the Accademia dei Piccoli). The four groups have taken on the difficult task of running the theatre for the next two years, with the possibility of renewing the challenge for a further five years after that. They are doing so in the belief that Livorno badly needs to preserve the few places it possesses dedicated to the arts and culture.
The group of young people pay a rent for the theatre to the local authorities and are entirely self-funded, so they have a hard job ahead of them. However, they are full of enthusiasm and determination and have a full programme of varied events lined up for the coming months, with which they hope to attract an equally varied audience.
The theatre itself holds an audience of just 120. The 2013-14 season includes:
Art theatre and theatre with a social theme
Theatre for children and teenagers
Traditional popular theatre
Concerts of classical music organised by the Associazione Culturale Mercury
Jazz, including a concert by American jass musician Paul McCandless
Live music from a host of popular bands from all over Italy
Contemporary art exhibitions
It will also be the venue for the Premio Ciampi, the Little Bit Theatre, the Mascagni Tribute, the FI-PI-LI Horror Festival, and a season of cinema (including two films in original language, hooray!).
During the daytime, the Nuovo Teatro delle Commedie will be used by Andrea Pellegrini’s Jazz Lab, the Accademia dei Piccoli, the Accademia Ntc (theatre, photography and music), as well as hosting early evening aperitivi with a theme.
The season begins on Friday 4th October at 7.30pm with a whole evening of entertainment, including the Cacciuk Orchestra, Livornese comedian Beppe Ranucci, dance, theatre and an aperitivo by the Cooperativa Biodiversi.
There is no better time, then, to support this local theatre with our presence during the coming season. To keep up to date with what’s going on, you can follow the theatre on the Facebook page “Teatro C Livorno”, or sign up to the mailing list on the website www.pilarternera.it. Those who wish to can also make a small but much needed donation towards the running of the theatre over the next months.
