Via Castelli, Pontino district The Pontino-San Marco district extends to the north-west of the city, bordering on the Venezia district. It lies along the main canal, the Fosso Reale, dominated by the 16th-century Fortezza Nuova designed by Buontalenti. In Piazza II Maggio stands the Porta San Marco, the gateway to the city erected in 1839-40 when the city limits were extended. It was the scene of fighting between the Livornese people and the Austrian troops when they invaded Tuscany in 1849.
