31 August 2009 The Regent cruise ship, Seven Seas Navigator, unusually spent a night in the Port of Livorno yesterday, so passengers - all part of the Canadian news group Globe & Mail - were able to enjoy some local Livornese entertainment in the form of Cristiano Grasso's Springtime and Evergreen Choirs.
The two choirs joined forces to bring the cruise passengers an hour of Italian music from the past and the present, including old favourites like O Sole Mio (performed by tenor Ennio Rognini), and Volare, to a piece from the new musical - Tobia (written and performed by Alex Mastromarino, accompanied by Alice Sentieri). Alex also gave a superb rendition of Caruso. Other songs included Smile from the film Life is Beautiful, and a number of Ethnic African pieces that Springtime are so good at.
The choirs were guided by their choir master Cristiano Grasso, and accompanied by Massimiliano Fantolini on keyboards and Giacomo Cirinei on Cajon.
The concert, which was organised by the Medov Shipping Agency (Livorno), was received enthusiastically by the audience who managed to persuade Cristiano to give them two encores! The last piece - Guantanamera - saw both choirs on stage together, and got the audience dancing in the aisles!
The event represented a rare opportunity for cruise passengers to meet some of the locals from Livorno instead of leaving the port at the end of the day.
